Guide to Improve IELTS Reading & Writing Skills

Raja Sekhar - Watch Webinar

The recently conducted webinar centred on ‘Ways to improve IELTS reading and writing skills’, witnessed an overwhelming response with 200+ registrations from across the country.

We live in a world where the Internet rules. It has dramatically revolutionised the way people and professionals connect. Webinars are one amongst the million features that the Internet offers. This crucial technology has made things quite easy for educators as well as learners.

In an endeavour to bring students and budding tutors of similar streams and interests together, for in-depth knowledge sessions with experienced expert educators, we at UrbanPro, hold a webinar every week. As part of this noteworthy initiative, UrbanPro as an educational platform associated with an IELTS trainer from Hyderabad, Raja Sekhar, to conduct a webinar on, ‘The ultimate guide on how to improve your reading and writing skills’.

According to Sekhar, “Reading for gist and main ideas; understanding inferences, comprehending the implied meaning and most importantly, recognising a writers opinion, attitudes and purpose,” are the primary maxims to score well in IELTS Reading section, as this particular section is about the ability to decode the meaning of a written string.

Best tips for IELTS Writing section

“The writing section is about the ability to encode thoughts and concepts into written form,” said Sekhar. Here are quick tips that can help you qualify the IELTS.

Timing:

Time is decidedly limited in IELTS exam hall. So, using time wisely is essential. For that, a student must read the questions very carefully and plan the essay after thorough brainstorming. One should not spend more than 15 mins on task 1, and 45 mins on task 2.

Planning

Proper planning is extremely crucial to perform well in the exam. Hence writing down examples in terms of bullet points is crucial. Making this a habit can help students retain facts in their mind for a long period of time. As a result, they tend to recall better while writing the exam.

Accuracy

Accuracy is the key to score well in the exam. Thus, it is important to check the write up for spelling, grammar and other punctuation errors.

Word count

In IELTS, an individual cannot write any number of words as per wish. One has to follow a stipulated word count. IELTS experts suggest to write at least 150 words in Task 1, and 250 words in Task 2, in case a test taker wants a band score 7.

Structure

Use of clear structures is extremely crucial such as ‘firstly’, ‘secondly’, ‘on the other hand’, ‘for example’, ‘to sum up’, ‘for instance’, ‘to conclude with’, ‘in conclusion’, etc.

Depth

Use of clear examples and signify sentences using - for instance, for example, etc.

Use examples

Something you read, a friend’s experience or your own, examples from another country or your own country for best results.

Spellings

It is imperative for a student to ensure that all words are correctly spelt. No one would want to lose unnecessary marks for poor spellings.

Review

The best way to assess the quality of any write -up, is self-review. It is suggested that students read their essays to themselves. Doing this gives them a better understanding of how much sense do their essays make, and if there is a need to modify facts or add some more details.

Proofread

Proofreading is like a ‘final check’. It ensures that no errors from major to minor ones are made. Overall, it improves one’s accuracy, as this is one of the most crucial guidelines for those aiming to score band 7 or above.

All in all, this session proved to be highly beneficial for students and tutors alike as they made the most of the discussion, and also got the opportunity to clarify doubts while connecting directly with Raja Sekhar, the IELTS expert. A remarkable number of IELTS students both Academic as well as General, registered from across India to participate in this online interaction in real-time.
