Power of Positive Visualization

We all have heard the expression - "Seeing is believing". The brain with its limitless capacities can help you immeasurably to achieve life's ambitions if you give it the chance. These are words from the wise. Today, we have so many self-help books in the market that talk about the power of positive visualisation. Some of these books are popular and have been best sellers. Rhonda Bryne's Secret is one such book. It is often said ‘what you think, you become'. So, as parents we have to believe in the power of positive visualisation to taste success in our own lives and then extrapolate that to our children. Parents are role models Today, children are much more precocious than those belonging to the earlier generation. Internet, mobile and other new forms of technology have sharpened the minds of children today. Children take to modern gadgets like fish to water. Children who are growing up tend to be fantastic observers of what happens at home and so, parents have to be careful about the language that they use at home. Discipline your children without hurting them / bruising them When we are furious with our children we end up cursing them and using cuss words. This should be avoided at all costs. Let us look at the following statements:
  • "You are not going to improve at all, you are good-for-nothing."
  • "If this is the rate at which you are going to watch television, you are surely going to fail in the exams".
  • "If you don't study well, you will end up cleaning toilets in the school".
  • "You are a useless person. you can never succeed"
  • "You can't even understand such a simple thing. O, God, how can you make someone so stupid"?
Such harsh statements will affect the morale of the children. If these words are uttered repeatedly, they will enter the sub conscious mind of your child and he/she will start losing confidence in his abilities. You have watched the movie "Tare Zameen Par" and how the boy's father behaved with him. If you are unhappy with the way your child is behaving, try adopting non violent methods like shutting yourself away from him, not talking to him for sometime so that your child understands his mistake. Spare the rod and spoil the child has become an old and redundant maxim in schools and homes. Throw the rod and nurture your child is the new mantra. What about these statements below?
  • "If you work hard and write your exams well, you can get full marks"
  • "Imagine the teacher has received the answer sheets. She is correcting your answer sheets. There is a smile on her face. You have answered all the questions correct and you have got full marks"  (say this to give a profound impact)
  • "Can you switch off the TV now? Amit and Rohit must be studying to score good marks. Do you want to be left out? Come on, go and study".
  • "Ok, so you have got this answer wrong. No problem. Work on this until you get it right."
  • "I am sure you will be very successful in life and drive your mamma in which car? " (Ask this question to your son!)
Such positive affirmations will definitely build the confidence of your child. Fear of failure Fear of failure will never allow you to succeed. Never fear failure, instead consider failure as another opportunity for you to succeed. In a likewise manner, as parents, the onus is on us to educate the children not to be afraid of failure. Use real life examples of people who have fought against all odds in life to taste success to inspire your children. The more and more you practice positive visualisation, the more and more you will achieve success in moulding the personality of your child in the right direction.
