The first process in the animation pipeline, and also one of the most important, is pre-production. It begins with the main concepts which are initially turned into a full story, and then, once the story has been finalized, other things such as the script, shot sequence and camera angles are worked on. Some major components of pre production are Story Boarding, Layouts, Model Sheets and Animatics. PRODUCTION: Now that the storyboard has been approved the project enters the production phase. It’s here that the actual work can start, based on the guidelines established during preproduction. Some major parts are layout, modeling, texturing, lighting, rigging and animation. POST PRODUCTION: Post-production is the third and final step in film creation, and it refers to the tasks that must be completed or executed after the filming or shooting ends. These include the editing of raw footage to cut scenes together, inserting transitional effects, working with voice and sound actors and dubbing to name just a few of the many post-production tasks. Overall, however, the three main phases of post-production are compositing, sound editing and video editing. The production pipeline detailed above is broadly common in most studios, however each studio is likely to have a custom pipeline determined by the type of project they are currently undertaking. read less

First, pick out your 3D animation software and explore the interface. You'll have a bunch of tools and options that you can manipulate and that can be pretty confusing when you're a beginner. Make full use of the help menu and various tutorials (and an instructor would help too) when you start. The basic steps for 3D animation though, go more or less in this order: First you create a 3D model (using the various 3D shapes and tools available in the software). Next you add a texture (or different textures, based on your model's design) to the model to give it colour and to make it look more realistic. (Textures are images that can be manipulated and applied to make the outside of a modeled object - like a spider for example - mimic how it looks in real life - like the tiny furry texture a real spider's body would have.) Third, you set up the environment's light and shadow settings using the various lighting and reflection options and tools in the software. And then finally, when your satisfied with the above, you set up a camera and then animate the model (and even the texture, lights and camera if you want) and render the animation into a movie clip. If you create more than one animation and final render as part of a story, you can edit the separate movie clips together like a video clip (with effects and sound and what-not even) and export it as a complete movie or video clip. (I'm answering this question on the hunch that you might be at least familiar with what 3D animation is. If you are a complete beginner, then just know that modelling, texturing, lighting, animating, and rendering are the general steps in creating a 3D animation.) read less

Rigging happens just before the animating happens. read less
