Example: LVDT: A shaft moves in a coil of bigger length. The change in length of shaft inside core changes the electrical output(e.g. impedance) which is measurable. Change in this electrical output gives indication of linear displacement for a calibrated sensor.

Solution of calculus problem highly depends upon the physics involved. Also, if you are unable to solve any particular problem by analytical method, go for numerical methods.

Strain is change in length divided by original length. Mechanical softwares express it as mm/mm or m/m go give a feel of unit used for distance calculations.
