I am in the 2nd year of my Chemical engineering studies. I scored in 87% in the 10th std, but my 12th score is below 50%. So, would I be able to fulfil the CAT exam's eligibility criteria?

Being Eligible to write CAT is different from being eligible to get into IIMS. There are so many factor based on which you get an interview call. When A student applied for IIMS right after bachelors, then inadvertently academics become the only criteria for them to decide. This however, is not the case with experience candidates. One you have a good industry experience of 3 years you can hit it better. If you seriously wish to pursue MBA do not limit yourself to IIMS on and look for atleast 5 best Bschools in the country. You are eligible to write all the entrance exams but I would suggest you to build an extremely strong profile before you apply.   1. You are eligible to write the exam as it is the Common Aptitude Test, not just for IIMs. Nobody can stop you from giving the exam. 
  2. You will not get a call from any IIMs if you are from General Category unless You are a 100%ler.
  3. If you are from another category, you will get calls from IIMS on a good CAT score.

Eligibility for CAT is an entirely different thing than eligibility for various B-Schools. Yes minimum criteria to appear for CAT is 50% in 10th, 12th and graduation for general category candidate.

And regarding your 12th score, it is something which can't be changed now. I would heavily recommend you try and score more than 80% in your graduation and try to build your profile by going for some better certifications and courses or extracurricular activities. It should make up for lack of score in 12th.

CAT eligibility depends on different institutions. So you may check brochures of various institutes, but good institutes select above 50% marks in 10 th & 12 th. Anyway, try the best institute suitable for you. All the best!

The eligibility criteria are that a candidate should have 50% in graduation. The issue will be with IIM calls because they consider 10th and 12th percentage. And the reason for your low score in 12th would probably the entrance test of engg that you must have focused on. Considering this, you need to score very high in CAT and try for non-IIM institutes like FMS, SP Jain, MDI, etc.

You will be eligible for CAT, but you might not be eligible for colleges as the colleges have their own selection criteria. Moreover, you can take the CAT exam in the last year of your engineering.
