You can join IT anytime but ensure you have sound knowledge of the languages or tools for which you are applying as fresher or lateral. For example, the market is good for fresher at present for web programming (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) and Python or combination of this two as well as a good selling point. Most of the intermediate companies look only for your comfortability and skill in any new technologies. They may offer less salary compare to big IT companies, but the learning curve will be more, and once you worked for 2-3yrs, that experience will get you whatever you like post that be it good salary or onsite etc..
