My previous employment was with Tata Consultancy Services as a System Engineer. I was part of a team that supported all the software applications used by retail stores of the American retailer, JCPenney. I directly interacted with the client for regular status calls and meetings every day. Impressed with my English language proficiency and communication skills, my manager gave me the opportunity to groom the members of the Help Desk team in their ability to communicate effectively in English. Although it wasn't much of teaching and not an official role as a trainer, I guided the team regularly to communicate in English with native speakers of the language. It was this experience that drove me to take up CELTA. Determined to take up English language teaching as a career, I resigned from the company and took up the Cambridge CELTA course at British Council, Chennai. I found myself producing well-thought out lesson plans and my tutorsâ?? feedback stated that my lessons were increasingly well-staged. I balanced between an interesting context throughout the lesson and an opportunity for learners to use the target language. One of the highlights of the feedback from my tutors was my ability to reflect on my own strengths and weaknesses and to receive feedback and act on it with little turnaround time. I believe that the skills I acquired from CELTA and my natural ability to teach make me a suitable candidate for the role of an English teacher/ communication skills trainer.
