The opening phase in chess is a significant one; it is like a basement to your game. Once you dont what happens in your opening play, then you would be more likely to resign the game, i.e. the probability of entering the middlegame or endgame could be difficult.

Okay, then how to play or choose chess openings??

The answer is The opening of your choice to suit your style.

I follow the below suggestions for myself as well as for my students regarding the opening phase.

  1. It would help if you found an opening that suits your style or playing strength. For example, Late world champion Jose Capablanca was very known for his endgame expertise. So he played simple openings which help to exchange pieces and reach endgames faster.
  2. Next, after selecting your opening, you need to look into some model games or famous games played by some grandmasters or even world champions. By doing so, you get some general ideas in it.
  3. Buy a good opening chess book or chess course to learn pawn structure, theory, strategic ideas, tactical themes and endgame positions.
  4. It would help if you looked for a grandmaster or strong players who always play your selected opening. So you can get a clear idea, i.e. how from beginning to endgame positions are handled.
  5. You play the opening in online platforms like lichess,chess.com or with coach etc. before playing it in serious chess events.

I hope the above five recommendations will be working for the readers to improve your opening play.

Thank you for going through this lesson.
