Vector is a quantity which is used to describe parameters with both magnitude and direction. For example, force has both direction and magnitude. Movement can best be described with the help of vector where we can explain the distance of movement as well as the direction in which the body has moved. It is denoted with a small arrow or bar above the letter or symbol chosen.

First you learn about scalar quantity. Till 10th standard we learnt about scalar quantity. Such as distance and speed.
It means scalar quantity has only magnitude we never talk about direction.
But vector quantity has both magnitude and direction for example displacement and velocity.
First We learn about displacement after that you can understand about vector.
In displacement we take a initial point and final point no matter how we reach final point we just see the shortest distance in displacement which is known as magnitude and we make a arrow from initial point to final point which shows its direction. So wee see in displacement we study both magnitude and direction. So it is a vector quantity.
But in 10 th class we studied about distance in which we only focus on magnitude and in distance we not take a shortest path we took all path and add all the distance to find total distance. So in distance we never take care about direction. So distance is a scalar quantity.

The quantities which have their magnitude and direction both are known as vector quantity.
But also follow the vector addition law then only the quantity is said to be vector. For example current has it's magnitude as well as direction but it is not a vector quantity because it doesn't follow the vector addition law. The examples of vector quantities are velocity, acceleration, force etc.
