The hydrocarbons in which each of the carbon atoms is linked with one or more of its adjacent carbon atoms by single covalent sigma bonds & the rest of the valencies of the carbon atoms are linked with hydrogen atoms by covalent sigma bonds, are known as alkanes or saturated hydrocarbons or paraffins. Hydrocarbons are those compounds which contain only carbon & hudrogen. The general formula of alkanes is C(n)H(2n+2), n=1,2,3,...alkanes are completely non-polar. As the carbon atom in them is in sp3 hybridised state they are inert to chemical reactions. we can classify alkanes according to the no of branched chain they have. 1) Normal alkanes:- They have no side chain. Has only a straight chain. eg- n-propane,n-butane. 2) Iso-alkanes:- they contain one branched chain.eg- Isobutane,Isopentane. 3)Neo-alkanes:- they contain two branched chain on same carbon atom. eg- neo-pentane. the first member of alkane homologus series is methane [CH4,n=1]. & then ethane [ C2H6,n=2], Propane[C3H8,n=3], Butane[C4H10,n=4], Pentane[n=5], hexane[n=6] and so on. The initial members of this series are gases at room temp. While the higher members are liquids & solids. read less

Alkanes are the simplest organic molecules, consisting of only carbon and hydrogen and with only single bonds between carbon atoms. Alkanes are used as the basis for naming the majority of organic compounds (their nomenclature). Alkanes have the general formula CnH2n+2.
