A chemical reaction can be called as oxidation when 1. The reactant loses Hydrogen atom or gains Oxygen atom 2. The reactant loses electron(s) 3. Reactant has an increase in oxidation state

For combustion, the usual oxidant is oxygen but, for an oxidation reaction to take place, oxygen is not essential. In combustion, the products are primarily water and carbon dioxide but, in oxidation, product can vary depending on the starting material.

• Combustion is an oxidation reaction. • For combustion, the usual oxidant is oxygen but, for an oxidation reaction to take place, oxygen is not essential. • In combustion, the products are primarily water and carbon dioxide but, in oxidation, product can vary depending on the starting material. However, always they will have a higher oxidation state than the reactants. • In combustion reactions, heat and light is produced, and work can be done from the energy. But for oxidation reactions, this is not always true. Combustion is the complete oxidation of organic compound into carbon dioxide and water molecules in presence of oxygen gas while oxidation is the addition of oxygen in a compound or with an element the loss of electron from an atom or ion is also oxidation but it is not the combustion. all oxidizing reactions are not combustion reaction.....but all combustion reactions are oxidizing.. oxidation reaction does not involve heat.....combustion reactions involve heat.... We hope that clarifies your query. read less

In simple words Combustion is burning in the presence of oxygen where as Oxidation is loss of electron by an element

I Assure Better Knowledge

Complete oxidation of organic compound is called combustion, after combustion a compound gives CO2 & H2O always. While oxidation is just addition of O2 and not necessary to give CO2 & H2O . All combustion are oxidation but all oxidation are not combustion.

The heat created by the burning of a fossil fuel is used in the operation of equipment such as boilers, furnaces, kilns, and engines. Along with heat, CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H2O (water) are...
