Actually "electronegativity" is not a property of an atom alone, but rather a property of an atom in a molecule. Properties of a free atom include "ionization energy" and "electron affinity". Electronegativity of an element will vary with its chemical environment, but it is usually considered to be a...

Electronegativity is the tendency of the nucleus of an atom to pull bonding electrons towards itself. The electrons are closer to the more electronegative atom in a bond because the orbitals associated with the atom are lower in energy than orbitals associated with the other atom.

As the effective nuclear charge increases (size decreases) nucleus tends to attract outermost electrons more effectively. On moving left to right on periodic table, electronegativity increases while it decreases on moving from top to bottom.

Electronegativity increases as you move across the periodic table from left to right. This occurs due to a greater charge on the nucleus, causing the electron bonding pairs to be very attracted to atoms placed further right on the periodic table. Fluorine is the most electronegative element. Electronegativity...

Electronegativity increases as you move across the periodic table from left to right. This occurs due to a greater charge on the nucleus, causing the electron bonding pairs to be very attracted to atoms placed further right on the periodic table. Fluorine is the most electronegative element. Electronegativity decreases as you move down the periodic table. This is caused by an increased amount of shielding, or screening, by the innermost electrons. As you move down the table more electrons are added between the nucleus and the bonding pair, causing the effective nuclear charge to be less. The increase in distance between the nucleus and the bonding pair decreases the attraction between the two. read less

because each atom has concentrated nuclear charge at center, if the effective nuclear charge is more atom try to attract electron density due to this phenomenon atom shows electronegativity . as the effective charge increases, electronegativity is also increases.
