Pick according to convenience and stick to the selected axes once selected. Choose axes and denote "Upward direction is taken as positive" or "downward direction is taken as positive" and so on.

mathematics learning is easy and interesting if fundamentals are clear.

In one dimentional motion the equation of motions are; v=u+at s = ut + ½at2 v2-u2=2as where u,v and a are vectors and they have directions. Conventionally we take direction of initial motion as positive. In case of body under gravity, we take a=-g when body is thrown upward i.e., against...

Convention to take sign in equations of motion : Since some gravity equations result in an object can changing directions, there needs to be a convention as to which direction is positive and which is negative. Due to the fact that the force of gravity is downward, it would only seem logical to define downward as a positive direction in gravity equations. This is essentially inverting the Cartesian coordinate system. Using vectors is an effective way to describe the initial and resulting motion of the objects and to set a convention for direction. We consider the displacement direction as positive below the starting point and negative above. Velocity is positive in a downward direction and negative when going upward. For horizontal motion, right is positive and left is negative. read less

Direction will be indicated by the sign (positive quantities point in +x direction, while negative quantities point in the ?x direction). Determining which direction is positive and which negative is entirely arbitrary.
