How do they live?..... because they have gills to breath in water and lungs to breathe when they are on the land. Bryophytes are plants like mosses and liverworts. They are usually found near water bodies and moist environment. Though they live on the land, their male gametes are not carried by wind for pollination. Male gametes are water-proof and flagellated( flagella is a tail like growth for swimming). They are shed in the water. These male gametes float in the water and reach the female gametes. This means their pollination needs water. So to complete the reproductive cycle, water is essential. read less

Because they are terristrial but require water at some stage of their life cycle, say for reproduction. Bryophyte living on the land can not complete its life cycle unless its gametes are fused for which they require water essentially. Without water the sperm will not swim and fuse with the egg. Hence, for completion of their life cycle bryophytes need both water while being terrestrial. So they are called as Amphibians of the plant kingdom (Amphi means "both").
