No. It originated by travelling Hindu bards and entertainers - kathakārs - and flourished and reached its peak with the Bhakti movement because of its charming and thrilling enactment of the stories of Krishna.

It is one of the eight classical dance forms of India and is unusual because it has both Hindu and Muslim gharāṇas (schools) and was the only classical dance that was approved of and sponsored by Mughal courts. Probably because it could easily be adapted to Urdu ghazals and the dancers were all fully clothed.
