Why is Odissi music not considered as a classical music like Hindustani and Carnatic where as Odissi dance is considered as oldest Indian classical dance form?

Indian classical music has 5 branches ;Avanti, Panchali, Odramagadhi, Hindustani and Carnatic. Odissi music comes under the odramagadhi tradition of music. Before the AIR(all India radio)… there was no Hindustani and Carnatic… every culture's music was different… in odissi music...

Indian classical music has 5 branches ;Avanti, Panchali, Odramagadhi, Hindustani and Carnatic. Odissi music comes under the odramagadhi tradition of music. Before the AIR(all India radio)… there was no Hindustani and Carnatic… every culture's music was different… in odissi music ragas from both Hindustani and Carnatic are used along with it's indigenous ragas… like we use raga bhairavi and also raga malkosh .. We use hamsadhwani and also raga shri… and all these are codified as per the odramagadhi grammar.

Odissi music has elements of both Carnatic and Hindustani schools of music. So, broadly speaking, India has two classical music styles- Carnatic and Hindustani.

 

Specifically, India has got lots more- Odissi, Sopana (Kerela) etc, but since they are quite related to either Carnatic or Hindustani, they can be regarded to be one of them (or a mixture of them).

Odissi music is basically Hindustani music with a Carnatic touch.
