Relevant Skills and Teaching Methods
Experienced in teaching beginners. I follow a set of exercises to help students build a strong musical foundation and voice culture over a period of two years.
Give all my attention to the student’s level and needs while also pushing them to keep improving. Have great excitement and willingness for teaching opportunities in music, especially among beginners. Seeing them mature both in musical skill and intellect is my main objective.
In depth technical knowledge of Hindustani vocal music, especially the khayal form.
Proficient and comfortable with different cyclical rhythms in the tabla like Tintal, Ektal, Chautaal, Jhaptal, Ada Chautal, etc. and making creative and challenging melodic patterns in different ragas.
Strong-ranged and clear voice on A, A# and B scales for Indian classical music.
Strong listening and mental ability in Indian music- Can notate and improvise freely without any assistance. Have devised and tested ways through which beginners can start to acquire creative musical intelligence and independence from the very outset.
Knowledgeable about the historical and philosophical foundations of Indian music and the challenges posed by the oral nature of its transmission for a modern audience.
I believe in encouraging Indian music students to commit lessons to memory from the very beginning without relying on a recorder or a notebook. Ultimately, they should be able to ‘speak’ music like a language. For that, it is essential that they be provided an environment where observing the teacher’s techniques and applying them to understand and communicate one’s own authentic expression is rewarded.
Up-to-date with academic writings on Indian music in the field of history and musicology.
Strong verbal communication skills and knowledge of technical musical terms in Hindi and English.
Basic knowledge of theories and techniques of Western musical forms including classical, jazz, blues, etc.
I encourage students to appreciate an expansive repertoire of musicians, emphasizing the importance of developing the ability to differentiate and identify different schools as well as individual styles through a combination of intensive and extensive listening practices from an early stage.
