Covalent bonds are the chemical bonds formed by sharing electron pairs (present in the outermost shell) between the atoms. These bonds are formed by two electronegative atoms only.
Carbon is a p block element that has an electronic configuration of 1s², 2s², 2p². So the outermost shell has 4 electrons (2s², 2p²), and it needs four more electrons to satisfy its octet configuration, which is only achieved by sharing 4 electrons from another atom/element.
