One can only learn it either under pressure or out of total love, both give the drive to spend much time with hearing and talking German. There are not just the hours you sit with a teacher to be counted, what counts most is your Greed to learn German, if you do not have it, then even 100 hours will not be enough. If one thinks just to go to Germany for a better life, but without liking the country, the people and their culture, then they might never be able to learn it, and they should not even try it. I taught a man of 18 from Colombia, who learned with me and on his own, and after 3 months, passed the exam for A1. He did not take many lessons, but mostly learned on his own from links and videos I had provided. Now he is in Germany as Au pair and travels around in Europe with his nice German guest family. Without an urge or really strong motivation it can take very long and still one might not even pass the exam of Goethe. German language is having 6 levels i.e A1-A2, B1-B2, C1- C2. A1 is the basic level that takes minimum 60 hours i.e one month. After learning A1 level students learn to communicate familiar, routine topics, such as introducing themselves, asking for directions and going shopping.

A simple short question, but not so simple to answer. For the most it depends on 2 things: a) What is "basic German" for you? b) How much time are you able to spend for the teaching and for the learning?! to b): Let's assume, you can learn 1 hour every day at home, 6 days a week. This would be rather intensive and will lead to a good, fast progress. You also go 2-3 times in a week for the lessons (I recommend 3/week). So ... to a): If you define "basic German" to fulfil the A1 level (e.g.) ... you will reach this aim within 3 months quite sure. Similar time steps for the following A/B/C-levels. The less time you invest, the longer it will last. But you also could define "basic German" in different ways. I use to give this answer to my students: 'If you want to be able to order a coffee in a coffee shop: In the 1st week. If you want to ask someone for the right way to go and will be able to understand the possible answers: minimum 2 months. If you want to read a simple language German book: minimum 1/2 year, but better calculate with more.` So the main factors for your progress in learning a language are: Your investment of time; an experienced teacher, preferable originally language speaking; your 'talent'. To learn equivalent to A1 level, you will need around 50 to 60 hours of classroom study in addition to similar numbers of hours on home work and assignments. With this effort, you will be able to write A1 level exam and clear it with flying colors. read less

You can learn any language as quickly as possible if you have a flair for it and the need. The courses however is a further guide. We cannot fix the duration of learning but listening a lot and having a partner to speak with in the language will make you learn better and faster.
