Tips for GMAT Verbal & AWA Section

Candidates aiming to pursue MBA at B-Schools will have tons of data to read and process in a minimal time. Scanning large material, analyzing business case studies, summarizing massive reports, are some of the basic skills needed for an MBA graduate. GMAT tests these proficiencies acutely through Reading Comprehension, Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning and Analytical Writing Ability (AWA) sections. Hence, acing at the Verbal and AWA section is not only about being good at English, but also about verbal reasoning.  This requires proven strategies and tips, let us see those:

GMAT Verbal and AWA Tips

Brush up Your Grammar Skills: Your grammar should be technically sound. Topics like Parts of Speech, Sentence Construction, Punctuations and Fragments and other similar topics should be revisited. Sentence correction section will test your grammar skills in particular. Read About Versatile Topics: This needs planning and enough time. Reading should become an everyday habit. Also, ensure you read from quality websites and magazines. Include a bit of business related news and articles as well. Apart from that the best way to improve your knowledge, speed, focus, vocabulary and grammar is to read everything you can find. Identify Principal Words: Reading comprehension passages can be lengthy and misleading. Candidates should practice fishing out the main theme of the passage, by screening key words to understand the message of the passage. Once the candidate has distinguished the same, answering questions can become straightforward and pretty easy. Analyze Incorrect Answers:This is probably one of the most important but neglected tips. In all three sub-sections of GMAT Verbal, analyze why your answer option was wrong. Compare your reasoning of an answer with that of the right answer and understand why the mistake was made. Brush up on the relevant topics if need be and make notes. Ascertain that the same mistake is not repeated. Do Not Skip Analytical Writing Part in the Mock Tests: Take the complete mock test including the AWA part. This gives you a better idea of the test day and also helps you structure your essay well. Your essays are very important and play a role in your admissions as well.  Spend the first few minutes in preparing an outline. Divide the essay into paragraphs for logical flow and easy reading. Allocate last few minutes to read and rectify.
