IELTS – Frequently asked questions

1) Is it possible to cheat in the IELTS Test?
You heard it right. There is no room for any candidates to cheat on their test, questions you encounter on your test date is not published anywhere else.

2) Does your band score get affected if you take the test in your country?

3) Is the IELTS speaking test like any other job interview?
No, it is not. You don’t always have to share the same opinion as that of your examiner. You won’t lose points if you disagree with your examiner’s notions about the topic. Be confident with your answers and avoid stuttering. By doing this you should be able to ace the IELTS 2018.

4) Will I lose marks if I ask the examiner to repeat the question?
Another common misconception amongst the test-takers is that they will loose marks if they ask for any form of clarification, well look at it this way if you do not understand the question, you might not answer it correctly, and that is when you end up losing marks. You can ask for any sort of clarification, that could include the meaning of any word if you do not understand.

5) Can non-native speakers achieve a band score of 9?
It is true, if you practice and work hard you can score a band score of 9.

How to prepare for IELTS listening?

Listening needs concentration, perseverance, purpose and understanding. Take a lot of IELTS practice tests which are readily available online and work on six essential skills which are required for the listening test.

Prediction
When you look at the questions you should try to predict the answer before you hear it because this makes it easier to get the correct answer. You can practice this skill by reading the title and any other information related to the talk or conversation you are going to listen and predict some of the things you might hear. Write them down to check if your answers are correct.

Synonyms and Paraphrasing
The listening test is also a vocabulary test. Many a time the answer will not be a direct match to the keywords in the question, but a synonym or a
paraphrase of those words. Practice synonyms and paraphrasing by listening to a short video and think about how each sentence could be
paraphrased. Practice this regularly! Over a period, you will get used to common synonyms which will help you in all parts of the IELTS test.

Connected Speech
Connected Speech means linking of words and sounds together in a sentence. It is difficult to understand the sentence when it is not clear. Practice this by pausing a phrase you don’t understand and replay it until you have followed all the words.

Recognizing Signposting Language
The two recordings of the IELTS listening test will be monologues, one in a social context and one in a lecture style. When someone is talking in this way they often use what is referred to as ‘signposting’ such as – this lecture is divided into three parts- ‘first of all’, ‘secondly’, ‘after that’.

Listening to Two People Talking
Two of the four recordings of the listening test will be a discussion between two people. These people will have different accents, different ways of speaking and they might agree or disagree with each other. Listening to two people talking at the same time is a very difficult task, hence practice this by listening to the recordings of two people having a conversation. Try to note down the necessary details.

Note Taking
Taking notes is essential in our day to day life. Practice taking down notes by listening to a recording or a lecture. Take short notes and then try to transcribe it to general notes.

To prepare for IELTS first develop your English language and be well aware of the format of the exam. Go through the modules then work more on the module in which you are weak. There are few tips given below to keep in mind during the exam:

For IELTS Reading test –

  • Don’t read the whole passage as time provided to you is limited.
  • Don’t extend the time spent on one answer. Move to the next one if you have answered. Do the same if you don’t know the answer to the question.
  • Don’t try to segregate answers for every question. Some questions will be difficult questions while the others will be easy. Try to work as per your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Divide the time for attempting the passage based questions. Assign 20 minutes for each reading. Time can be increased or decreased according to the complexity level of a passage.
  • Refrain from spending more than 25-30 minutes on a single passage. It is advisable not to procrastinate even for a minute while attempting the passage.

For IELTS listening test –

Take a lot of IELTS practice tests which are readily available online.

  • Increase the volume of your audio.
  • In your listening sheet, try to write down as much information as you can get about a specific question. In your final answer, reduce the data accordingly in the sheet. Afterwards, you will get ten minutes to fill in your answer sheets.
  • Keep yourself free from stress. If you fiddle too much, you may miss out on crucial data related to your question.
  • The synonyms of the words used in the question should be kept in memory while attempting the answer.
  • Even if you have missed out an answer, try remembering any data that you can. An extra ten minutes are provided since there is no negative marking of any sort. There is no point in lea ving any question unanswered.
  • During your real test, Contact your supervisor at once, if the volume of your audio is not perceptible.
  • Keep your eyes closed, so that you can focus your senses towards listening.

For IELTS Writing test –

Read samples of essays found online.

  • Begin with your essay (task 2)
  • Read the topic two or three times before you start answering.
  • Rearrange your thoughts in an orderly fashion. Strategize your answer mentally. The arguments presented in the answer should have a logical sequence.
  • Try writing in a comprehensible way.
  • Revise what you have written quickly. If there is some time remaining, use that to correct any spelling and grammatical errors that you made while answering.
  • Avoid making repetitions. Think up of synonyms for replacing a word as quickly as you can. Use antonyms by negatively paraphrasing the sentence.

Word of the day

Tips to keep in mind during the exam

In the IELTS Academic Writing Test you have to develop a short report based on graphics, pie chart, a line graph, a table, a bar chart, a representation, or an image. (Word limit – 150 words)

Climb Ascend

How to use fillers when you are running out of ideas?

Everyone gets nervous – to imagine what a nerve-racking experience it is going to be when you have an examiner judging the way you speak! I am sure that is how most candidates feel when they appear for IELTS Speaking Test. It is normal when you start using fillers, but let’s not use the social media jargon such as ‘like’ and ‘totally’.
Filler words are words (and phrases) that are used to fill silence when you’re speaking. We can use formal fillers, for example, you are not clear about ideas, or it is taking time to phrase a sentence at that time filler words can save you

Filler Example
Actually ‘Actually, India has 29 states and seven union territories’.
Basically ‘Basically, the last Avengers movie was seriously exciting!’”
I guess ‘I guess it is safe to say that it took nearly 14 years for the new Incredibles movie to be released’.
You see ‘I love chocolate, but you see I am diabetic and must control my sugar level’.
