It is said that the origin of Indian classical music (shastriya sangeet) goes back to the Vedas. Samaveda is said to have musical
hymns and also said to describe music in detail. One of the oldest texts that
laid down fundamentals of performing arts, namely music, dance and drama, was
the Natyashastra.
Indian classical music is divided into Hindustani (performed
predominantly in northern India) and Carnatic music (performed widely in
southern India). The art was traditional taught through the guru-shishya parampara where the music
was passed on via oral lessons and recitations. Both styles have similar
substance but are rendered very differently. Both the styles are accompanied by
tanpura/tambura as a drone, tabla/mridang for rhythm and sarangi/harmonium/violin for tune.
Classical music also extends to musical instruments such as
shehnai, sitar, veena, violin, mridangam, tabla, ghatam, etc.
Hindustani music
Hindustani music has lot of Persian influence which got incorporated into the Sanskrit version during the Mughal period. A typical Hindustani musical recitation has an introductory aalap, followed by the actually singing or bandish and ending with drut.
There can be number of such songs in a recitation. However,
the type of songs chosen can differ: dhrupad,
khyal, tarana, thumri, ghazal, bhajan, etc. These types are categorized
based on its structural nuances.
Hindustani music emphasizes on the ‘aakar' rather than the words.
Carnatic music
Muslim influence never touched Carnatic music and to till date it contains most of its original structure as described in ancient texts. A typical Carnatic music recitation will commence with raaga aalapana, move onto to the song (aka pallavi and charanam), improvising one single line of the song through niraval, elaborating the raagam using kalpanaswaram, followed by solo time for the rhythm accompanist (tani aavartanam) and ending the song by singing the first stanza without much improvisation.
Carnatic music emphasizes on the swaram rather than aakaram.
Western classical and Indian classical music
The distinct difference between western classical and Indian
classical music is that the former is majorly polyphonic (multiple melodies
sung together in unison), while the latter is monophonic (only one melody is
sung by the performer(s)). Both western and Indian types have the same swaras (sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa OR do
re mi fa sol la ti do) but different tuning systems (Indian: just -intonation;
western: equal-temperament).
