Bamboo flute may the oldest instrument of all.  Because it is made up of natural material.  In South Indian Carnatic music we play Harikamboji(28 Melakartha) in the beginning instead of Maya Malava Gowla.

To start with,  try to blow as we blow in a bottle and make a sound.  Then keep the second sector of your three fingers (Index, Middle and Ring Fingers) of the left hand (If the flute you hold is right side) on the three holes close to mouth hole. If you feel convenient to hold the flute with the left side, just change right as left and left as right. (Other things are same). Then close the two holes alone which are closer to mouth hole, with the second sector of your fingers and blow with normal pressure. This is the aadhara sadjam (Sa). Then try to give double the pressure now with same fingering i.e., only two holes near to mouth hole closed. This is higher octave (upper sthayi) sadjam.

Now, open the second hole finger from the mouth hole end which is Re. Now, open the first hole finger close to mouth hole which is Ga. Now don't try Ma as because it difficult. Blow with double pressure now with Sa fingering (by closing Two holes nearby mouth hole).

Then close the third finger from mouth hole, which is now Ni. Then close the fourth finger (Other hand Index finger) from the mouth hole end. This is Dha now. If you close the fifth (i.e. Middle finger of the second hand from your mouth hole), it is Pa now. After this, if you close the sixth finger (ring finger of the second hand from mouth hole), and open the first finger (Index) of the first hand closer to mouth hole, is Ma now.

So, you can hear S R G  S (High) N D P M sound.
