A covalent bond is also called an electron-pair bond. In this bonding, sharing of electron pairs between neighbouring atoms takes place.

  • The simplest case of a single covalent bond occurs in H2.
  • In the molecular orbital of H2, the two electrons are equally shared between the nuclei, so not specific to any atom.
  • The two shared electrons are more likely to be found between two nuclei, and thus the electron density is relatively high.
  • In covalent bonding, the neighbouring atoms share their valence electrons.
  • Thus, covalent bonds are formed by sharing of electrons.
  • The elements of group III, IV, and V of the periodic table enter into covalent combinations.
  • Examples of covalent bond are Diamond, H2, CH4, Si & Ge materials.

  • In a carbon atom, the electronic configuration is 1S22S22P2.
  • It needs four more electrons to get a stable configuration, so carbon forms a tetra bond.
