A dollar sign $ is called a locked cell reference. Locked cell references are one of the building blocks of Excel modeling. Without them, you will waste endless amounts of time re-writing formulas.

Using dollar sign means either make column or row or both constant.  When we copy formulae vertically down or horizontally right, it freezes reference of particular cell and do now allow that reference to move from it's position.

Type of cell references where $ sign is used:

1. Absolute Referece (Dollar sign against both row and column reference)

2. Mixed Reference with column constant (Dollar sign against column name only)

3. Mixed Reference with row constant (Dollar sign against row number only)

It means that the row or column which comes after thedollar sign is anchored or absolute. When you copyExcel formulas, they will copy cells referred in that formula relative to the position where they are being copied to.

Hi Poonam

$ sign in excel is used for Absolute reference. It is a notation used if you want the same cell to be referred across rows or columns for various formulae.

Usually it may be noted that the cell reference will sequentially change when we drag a formula. However with $ we can define the reference to same cell without changing.

Hi Poonam,

Dollar sign or even Rupee sign or any currency is used when we have data with Money involved.

Like for cost value , sale value.

With help of currency we can make it global.

For example you received a data where cost is written only 120, now you cannot evaluate whether it is 120$ or 120Rupee. So that is the reason , to make  it more specific we use Currency sign.

Hope it helps.
