Yes, that's a good idea. Specially while shooting against the sun. But you can only do so effectively only if your speedlight supports HSS, High Speed Sync. Else you would be limited to a shutter speed of 1/200 or 1/250 of a second. This can be countered with a narrow aperture or an ND, Neutral Density...

Else you would be limited to a shutter speed of 1/200 or 1/250 of a second. This can be countered with a narrow aperture or an ND, Neutral Density filter. If you want soft results avoid flash, as the use of flash helps provide lighting as well as renders sharpness to the subject. Daytime shooting has three situations, one when the subject's face is in direct sunlight, second the subject is in against light means sunlight from subject's back and the third when the subject is in shade. Though flash can be used in all the three situations but it has to used differently. In the first case when subject is in direct sunlight , flash can be avoided, but if used can reduce the shadow under the eyes and under the chin. A direct undiffused flash with less power can be fired to provide a fill light.Second situation when the subject is against light. you can create a silhouette without using a flash, but if you desire to show the face, flash becomes a necessity. Try using flash with a diffuser (a small soft box) off camera from a angle to get beautiful and pleasing portraits. Third situation when the subject is in shade, without flash you get soft portraits, but if you want crisp details, flash is a must. Again try using it with some diffuser placed in from of the flash. Though an elaborate subject, I hope I made few things clear. read less

The problem taking outdoor portraits is that often times the sunlight is harsh and may not come from the direction you desire, creating shadows on the subject's face. I usually overexpose the scene (like +2EV in the picture above), therefore lighting up the subject at the expense of blowing out the background. With flash, I get to light up the subject as well as keep the background evenly exposed. But this is only possible if you can control the shutter speed under your camera sync speed. Alternatively you can use ND filter along with flash to expose the subject and background properly. read less

For day time you should avoid using flash. And try to use the natural day light at the right angle to get the perfect photograph. At right angle during the day time you can get the kind of photographs you want believe in yourself and your vision of capturing things.

Creativity has no limitation. Yes, you can and should use flash for portrait shoot. It will give magical effect.

Try not to use a flash if you have sufficient light to click a portrait. If you get a good picture variation ISO, shutter speed and aperture, do not use flash. If lighting conditions are not in your favor, use flash, but always use a diffuse. Direct flash sometime burns good images.
