It separated the mostly Muslim populated eastern area from the primarily populated Hindu western area on 16 October 1905 after the partition was announced by Lord Curzon (Viceroy of India from 1899 to 1905) on 19 July 1905.
Lord Curzon stated the reason for partition was to produce administrative efficiency. However, the principal motive was to weaken a united party against the government. The division led the Muslims to form their national organization along the communal lines.
Later on, to appease the Bengali sentiment, Bengal was united by Lord Hardinge(Viceroy and Governor-General of India from 1910 to 1916) in 1911 in response to Swadeshi Movement.
