Linux is not an OS. It is a kernel. OS = Kernel + Utilities. GNU Linux (referred to as GNU / Linux) is an OS, where in Linux is the kernel and utilities are provided by GNU. Redhat, fedora, ubuntu etc... are the distributions (few come for free, few with premium).

Companies participating in the Linux economy share research and development costs with their partners and competitors.
