What is shorthand?

(a small write up /introduction to students joining in the beginners shorthand class)

It is an art which is used to write words in short forms using strokes and curves. There are many systems prevailing in the world. However Pitman system is considered the simplest and pioneer of all systems. In shorthand, the words are written based on the spoken sound of the particular word. So the listening to the sound of the words is important than the letters of a word to write the words fast.

At the beginning, concentrate only in deep and constant practice than trying to write fast.

Once you are familiar with the principles to some extent, on completion of initial twenty five lessons, you would come to know how the principles are helping to get accurate and legible outline for each word.

After completing fifty exercises, you can proceed further exercises, besides, copying, translating pitman transcription and learning new principles in further lessons. Once you complete hundred twenty five lessons, you are able to achieve writing eighty words   per minute in shorthand.

A brief description of pitman shorthand system. and the difference between language and pitman system.

1.a.As there are twenty six alphabets in English language, there are twenty six strokes in  shorthand which are written by straight and curved strokes.

b.The strokes are called consonants. Each consonant has its own value in writing  words. There are no vowels in pitman system as in the language. However, there are vowel sounds which are expressed  by way of light and heavy dashes and dots according the sound. These dots and dashes are called vowel signs which are important to read the word in that outline.

  1. The strokes are written lightly or heavily based on the sound of the words.

Each stroke has its own unique value. Light strokes are written lightly and heavy strokes are heavily to differentiate the heavy and light sounds.

  1. In pitman shorthand there are totally 12 vowel sounds expressed by small dots and dashes.

  1. There are six long vowel sounds and long short vowel sounds.

  1. For long vowel sounds, heavy dots and dashes are used.

(Remember the sentence “Pa may we all go too”) for six long vowels.

All the  above six long vowel sounds are defined as under:

1.Pa  -in this word, the sound is heard as in the words of  Park, mark, bark etc. This is a long vowel sound.

2.may – in this word, the sound is heard as in the words  Pay,  ache, cake, bake, rate, dame etc.,  that means ae  or   ay  is long vowel sound.

3.we – in this word, the sound is heard as in the words tea, sea, fee etc.,

T he above three vowels in the first half of the sentence are expressed in pitman shorthand by heavy dots placed either before or after the strokes depending upon the vowel sound heard in the word.

As there are three long vowel sounds, there are three places to a stroke to place the vowel sign nearby to the stroke. (the places of vowel sign to the strokes will be explained later after familiarizing with all the twenty six strokes.)

The long vowel sounds in the second half of the specimen sentence.

  1. All – in this word, the sound is as heard in the words Paul, auditor etc.,

  1. go – in this word, the sound is as heard in the words, road, pow, pour, tole, door, etc.,

6.too – in this word, the sound is as heard in the words, shoe, route, cool, mood, etc.,

These three long vowel sounds are expressed by a small heavy dash to the stroke on their relevant places according to the vowel sound of the word.

The long short vowel sounds.

Remember the sentence “ that pen is not much good”

Definition for the vowel sounds of the words in the above sentence.

1.that – in this word the vowel sound is as heard in the words mad, dam, pad, tap, etc.,

This is a light sounded vowel.

2.pen – in this word, the vowel sound is as heard in the words  bed, ten, net, belt, sent, beg etc.,  this is a light sounded vowel.

3.is – in this word, the vowel sound is as heard in the words pig, rip, pin, nil, sip etc.,

It is a  light sounded vowel.

The above three light sounded vowels are expressed by small light dots placed next to the responding strokes.

4.not – in this word, the vowel sound is as heard in the words  pot, dot, rod, sock, rock etc.,

5.much – in this word, the vowel sound is as heard in the words like rum, bug, gun, lust, one, etc., it is a light sounded vowel.

6.good – in this word, the vowel sound is as heard in the words like food, look, foot, rook etc this is a light sounded vowel.

The above three short vowels are expressed by light dashes next to the corresponding strokes.

As there are three short vowel sounds, there are three places to a stroke to place the vowel sign nearby to the stroke. (the places of vowel sign to the strokes will be explained later after familiarizing with all the twenty six strokes.)

Note: the vowels are most important in writing the pitman shorthand. But the strokes are to be well practiced before learning the vowels.
