We say they are a family because they can all be traced to a common ancestor, a colloquial form of Latin. Having a common ancestor means that they are all basically similar, especially in their grammar (which tends to change more slowly) and way of expression but also similar vocabulary.

Portuguese comes from Galicia in Northwest Spain. By far, it is considered the most similar language to Spanish. They are closely related and quite similar in many ways. They both occupy the unique geographic layout of the Iberian Peninsula.
