0A remedial teacher is a person who helps children facing difficulties in academics to catch up with their peers.
Difficulties in academics and drop in grade occur due to one or more difficulties such as an inability to recognize alphabets and words (dyslexia), an inability to process complex instructions, an inability to comprehend instructions, or other difficulties.
A child who is facing difficulties in coping with his school work usually faces other difficulties at school such as ragging by peers, bullying, and scolding from teachers (and sometimes parents too). All these factors demoralize the child and further add to the problem at hand.
A remedial teacher helps identify the areas of concern and help the child overcome his specific difficulty. Remediation is a long process and success depends on four main factors – the child’s capabilities, parental support, circumstances at home, and support from school. Depending on these factors a child may take from 1 to 5 years to catch up to his peers.
A remedial teacher guides not only the child but also the parents on how to deal with the issues (both academic and non academic) and overcome them. The course is conducted using therapeutic practices to give the child a wholesome growth.
During the course of remediation the teacher will adopt a holistic approach focusing on all the areas of concern and helping the child cope.
For example when a person loses a leg, the therapist helps him walk with prosthesis. Similarly a remedial teacher will teach the child to deal with his difficulties and overcome them in the best possible manner.
