This is a compound sentence and therefore there are no dependent clauses. Compound sentence will have one or more dependent clauses joined by conjunctions. 1st dependent clause: "No man, in all the procession of famous men, is reason or illumination, or that essence we were looking for Conjunction: but (it joins the two dependent clauses) 2nd dependent clause: is an exhibition, in some quarter, of new possibilities. "'No man" is the subject for both the clauses. The prepositional phrases, "in all the -------",and "in some quarter", "of new possibilities" might confuse you. Focus on the subject and the predicate. You will find dependent clauses in complex sentences. Look at this example: I played hockey when I was young. Independent clause: I played hockey Dependent clause: when I was young. "When" is the subordinate. The second sentence is a secondary sentence purely dependent on the first (main) clause. read less

Hi, if I am not wrong,' No man, in all the procession of famous men, is reason or illumination, or that essence we were looking for'is an independent clause. 'but' is a linker hence becomes a dependant clause.
