The Difference between Affect & Effect

Mazher Hussain S

Affect and Effect are frequently confused words. Though they sound similar to some extent, they are entirely different in meaning. People often make mistakes while writing. They get stuck when they have to choose between these two words. Choosing the
right word is important, otherwise the meaning of the sentence changes.

So let’s see what is the difference between Affect & Effect and how to use these words correctly.

The word “Affect” is mainly used as a Verb. Now, if you are thinking what a Verb is, Verb is an action word. It describes an action.

Now let’s see what is the meaning of “Affect”. It means “to influence or make a difference”. Let me give few examples for your better understanding:

  • Smoking affects our health.
  • Radiation emitted by mobile phones affects brain function.
  • The movie affected him so much that he can’t stop thinking about it.

“Effect” on the other hand is more commonly used as a Noun. Noun is a naming word. It can be name of a person, place, thing, etc.

“Effect” refers to the result or the outcome. Let me give few examples for your better understanding:

  • What are the effects of smoking?
  • This medicine has no side effects.
  • Deforestation has negative effects on the environment.
