Use of Modal verbs in spoken English

Modal verbs are known to be as one of the tough parts of spoken English. But if we understand the usage of Modal verbs in 6 well spread points, then it becomes quite easier to use it effectively in Spoken English.

1) used in expressing certainty, probability or possibility of an outcome or event:

Must: it expresses 95% of possibility for an event to happen. But it takes evidence also in addition.

For e.g. It must be a bomb, look at its red and yellow wires and also its ticking countdown clock.

यह 'पक्के से' बम हो सकता है।

Can: it expresses 80% of possibility for an event to happen. But it generally doesn't add evidence. But if the speaker uses CAN then he has the confidence of 80% for that event to happen.

*Must and Can: Modals of Certainty

For e.g. It can be a bomb

May: it expresses 50-50% of possibility for an event to happen.

For e.g. it may be a bomb., It may rain today

यह *शायद* बम हो सकता है। आज *शायद* बारिश हो सकती है

*May: Modal of probability

Might/could: it expresses only 5-20% of the possibility for an event to happen. It shows the least possibility. An event is least likely to happen. The speaker is least confident about the event to happen.

For e.g. it might/could be a bomb.

यह *शायद ही* बम हो सकता है।
