1. "An" is used to denote any singular noun that starts with any of the vowels (a,e,i,o,u).
eg: An apple, An engine, An ice-cream, An umbrella, An orange
2. "A" is used to denote any singular noun that starts with any of the consonants.
eg: A horse, A girl, A man, A book.
Note: We do not use "a" or "an" when we refer to plural nouns.
