4 down vote favorite 1 The "i" in "decide" is pronounced , whereas the first "i" in "decision" is pronounced , at least in American English. The same with pairs like collide/collision, divide/division, etc., despite the fact that the stress is on the second syllable in both words.

The "i" in "decide" is pronounced a?, whereas the first "i" in "decision" is pronounced ?, there are few more words which are pronounced similar like divide & division or collide and collision

In the syllable 'cide' a trailing "e" following a vowel-consonant combo tends to make the vowel long. The syllable 'cis' has no trailing "e" and it ends with a consonant, not a vowel. Therefore its vowel is short.

I more commonly hear "we need to decide" as a simple statement of fact, whereas "we need to make a decision" often comes with a tone of irritation and desire to resolve a decision process that has stalled or taken too long. Although I suppose anything can be delivered with a tone of irritation.

English Erudition

There is no hard and fast rule as far as pronunciation is concerned. But we can say, similar rhyming words follow the same pattern more or less, example, like ' decide', the word ' reside' has' residence' and "preside" has "president"as noun forms following the same pattern pattern.

First of all I hope you are not going to try to compare my answer to http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/vowels, from where many of these questions are coming, (as if to test the tutors) which did not give the answer btw. There is no final answer; the rule of thumb, guidleine is: The pronunciation of the vowel length is affected by the ending consonant sound. If your word ending is a voiced consonant (that is the z sound made by voice box, hence voiced ) the vowel is sounded a little longer In front of unvoiced (aspirated or whispered) the vowel sound is a little shorter. The voiced consonants are: B, V, Th (as in they, feather but not thunder), D, Z, DG, J sound as in genre and jump, G as in good. Unvoiced are P, F, Th (as in thunder, etc.) and you can look up the rest. Compare- Bad is pronounced longer than bat. Bid - Bit. However there are other spelling/pronunciation rules which affect Englsih pronucaition. e at the end o a word makes the vowel ahead of it say the long sound; compare bit vs bite mitt vs mite, twin vs twine etc. However some words have a syllable differentiator. For verbs and nouns of the same word/word root difference, which are di-syllabic- in verbs the stress is on the second syllable- 'pre-sent' a gift and receive a present, for example. Thirdly, -ion endings which make the word longer, divide, vs division (it also changes the form of the word from verb to noun). Other than that the explanation gets very technical. read less
