News paper reading is the 'Base'. When you read syllabus within your command is mandatory. When you study or what ever your resources focus should be on mains level, that is what ever topics you cover you must  be able to write 150 -200 words answer.

Market is for buyers and researchers .UPSC aspirant should focus on minimal books unless he could not stop his impulsive tendency to buy.

Basic textbooks and question papers ' analysis is better. Then chose books of reputed Authors or material from Internet. What should be reading is for understanding of student than relying reputed Authors.

Focus should be on news paper and previous year question paper. And formulate opinion for the matters, for that unbiased attitude and informative analysis is mandatory. Here helps magazines.

Overall a holistic approach with practical thinking towards preparation is satisfactory.
