You can learn to play the basics in a few weeks - ie. to play sarali varisa, janta varisa etc. If you practise well, you'll be able to play Geethams in few months , say in 6-7 months (if you learn systematically). Then there are different levels. You'll be introduced to Varnams. Here you'll be given good exposure to different ragas. The full essence of every ragam is taught in 2 kalas. This may take about one-half yrs . After this level, you'll be taught Keerthanas. There is no end to learning this level. There are simple to most toughtest songs. Then you'll be taught to play manodharma sangeetham viz. Pallavi, niravals, kalpana swaras etc. Your guru will be the best guide to tell you when you are well equipped with playing veena on your own. read less
