Western dance, known as ‘Kicker Dance’ in Texas, is a dance form that originated and became a striking identifier of the western world, including America. Precisely, the dance form is actually known as ‘Country Dance’ or ‘Western Country Dance’. All these terms are used interchangeably to recognise just one single form of dance; usually danced to the country-western music. The dancers practice different dance forms by following numerous techniques that result in beautiful moves complementing the background music. Dancers enjoy the dance moves anywhere from dance bars to social (or dance) clubs to ballrooms to different levels of dance competitions.
This is known to be a casual and yet a friendly dance style. Dancers come together to dance and have fun. They prefer to have fun while dancing instead of just following the dance techniques and formations. All these efforts help in creating a healthy atmosphere which is enjoyed by all the participants, irrespective of their age and abilities.
History and Evolution
History of Western dance reveals that this dance had originated as an entertainment sport and not an original dance. Going back to the times, when America was home to inhabitants from different cultures, people from different backgrounds gathered to dance after completing their hard day’s work schedules. As these people belonged to different cultures, they introduced different steps from the native dances and danced on common music.
While dancing, they never focused on polishing their dance moves and steps rather they danced just to shed off their tiredness. It has been reported that the cow boys used to join the dance by making a wild whoop and a goat cry. Moreover, this dance was not an original one, but, an adaptation of different traditional steps, introduced by the immigrants themselves.
With time, the dance has evolved to its present day form and style. Today, country-western dance is practiced in ballrooms. It has emerged from a rhythmic combination of two dance styles, namely: ‘Western Swing’ and ‘Victorian’ Ballroom dance. Like other dance forms, country music is an inseparable part of the country western dance. It follows the ‘two-step’ rhythm.
Types
Several types of dance forms are practiced in country western dances. Every single dance style has many versions depending on the area of U.S., where they are danced. Some of the remarkable types of western dance include:
- Two Step
- Waltz
- Cowboy
- Polka
- Ten Step
- Cha Cha
- Other Western Promenade Dances
o East Coast Swing
o West Coast Swing
o Night Club Two Step
- Western Group Dances
o Line Dance
o Square Dance (Traditional and Western)
A little different type of categorization is followed in the ballroom dancing. It includes categories, such as:
- Partners Dances: includes making patterns while dancing with the partners. It includes leads and follows.
- Group Dances: includes dancing in groups along with the partners. It includes line dances and Square dances.
