Western music history dates back to 400 AD beginning with the medieval era. Western music underwent a massive transformation through each era (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical era, Romantic era and the contemporary). Though vocal music was in rage for most of the time period, instrumental music came into limelight during the 17th century with instrumentalists such as Vivaldi (violinist) and Bach (organist and violinist) reaching great fame and laying down fundamentals of western instrumental music.
Components of Western Music
The basic notes or music syllables (aka solfège) are expressed as do re mi fa sol la ti which are exactly same as the Indian sa re ga ma pa dha ni.
In most contemporary sheet music one can see that the music will be written on either the treble clef staff:

The scale or the pitch (shruthi or sruti) are named from A to G, with minor and major sub pitches. In western notations, C major will be denoted in a music sheet as follows

Types of Western Music
Classical Vocal music and genres
Solo - singing as single person; mass and chorus - large number of people performing vocal music; motet - group singing on sacred texts; opera - singing along with acting and dancing; Oratorio - orchestra performed on sacred topics; a cappella - imitating instrumental music; contemporary - pop, jazz, country, R&B, etc.
Instrumental music and genres
Prelude - a form of preface to the song to be played on the instrument; imitation - performing the same song in different pitches; Toccata - a musical piece to emphasis dexterity of the person's skill in playing the instrument at a quick pace; sonata - a solo instrument composition; symphony - a combination of 3 or 4 sonatas.
