The soil which is neither sand, silt, or clay is called loam. Loam soils contain more nutrients, moisture and humus than sandy soils. So they use these soils for grooving cotton.

a soil containing 15% clay, 20% silt and 65% sand is sandy loam and a soil containing equal amounts of sand, silt and clay is clay loam. Loam is soil composed of sand, silt, and clay in relatively even concentration (about 40-40-20% concentration respectively), considered ideal for gardening and agricultural uses. Loam soils generally contain more nutrients and humus than sandy soils, have better infiltration and drainage than silty soils, and are easier to till than clay soils. Loams are gritty, plastic when moist, and retain water easily. In addition to the term loam, different names are given to soils with slightly different proportions of sand, silt, and clay: sandy loam, silty loam, clay loam, sandy clay loam, silty clay loam, and loam. A "loamy" soil feels mellow and is easy to work over a wide range of moisture conditions. A soil dominated by one or two of the three particle size groups can behave like loam if it has a strong granular structure, promoted by a high content of organic matter. However, a soil that meets the textural definition of loam can lose its characteristic desirable qualities when compacted, depleted of organic matter, or has clay dispersed throughout its fine-earth fraction. Loam soil is ideal for growing crops because it retains nutrients well and retains water while still allowing the water to flow freely. This soil is found in a majority of successful farms in regions around the world known for their fertile land. read less

Loamy soil is a mixture of sand, soil and silt. Silt particles are present between sand and soil particles. It also contains humus, and is, therefore, considered the best for the growth of plants. The percolation rate is between that of sandy soil and clay soil.

Loamy soil, a relatively even mix of sand, silt and clay, feels fine-textured and slightly damp. It has ideal characteristics for gardening, lawns and shrubs. Loamy soil has great structure, adequate drainage, is moisture retaining, full of nutrients, easily cultivated and it warms up quickly in spring, but doesn't dry out quickly in summer. Loamy soils require replenishing with organic matter regularly, and tend to be acidic. Great for: Climbers. bamboos, perennials, shrubs and tubers such as Wisteria, Dog’s-tooth violets, Black Bamboo, Rubus, Delphinium. Most vegetable crops and berry crops will do well since loamy soil can be the most productive of soil types. However, loamy soil requires careful management to prevent depletion and drying out. Rotating crops, planting green manure crops, using mulches and adding compost and organic nutrients is essential to retain soil vitality. read less

Sandy loam soil includes Sandy soil clay and silt. While silt is very fertile clay has lots of moisture retention capability, which is essential for cotton. Thats why sandy-loam soil is used for grooving cotton
