NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Physics, Chapter 11 - Thermal Properties of Matter

In this chapter, we will learn about the thermal properties of different objects. As we know, the term ‘thermos’ is associated with heat. Heat is a form of energy which is dissipated from one body to another by virtue of the temperature difference. This chapter is an integral part of your NCERT Physics for class XI, Part-II syllabus.

Let us take a look at the subtopics of Class 11, Physics, Chapter 11, Thermal Properties of Matter.

11.1. Introduction.

11.2. Temperature and Heat.

11.3. Measurement of Temperature.

11.4. Ideal Gas Equation and Absolute Temperature.

11.5. Thermal Expansion.

11.6. Specific Heat Capacity.

11.7. Calorimetry.

11.8. Change of State.

11.8.1. Latent Heat.

11.9. Heat Transfer.

11.9.1. Conduction.

11.9.2. Convection.

11.9.3. Radiation.

11.9.4. Blackbody Radiation.

11.9.5. Greenhouse Effect

11.10. Newton’s Law of Cooling.

In class 11 Physics, Chapter 11, you will learn:

Section 11.2: In this section, you will learn about the topics associated with heat, such as- temperature is the quantitative measurement of the degree of hotness of a body.

Section 11.3: In this section, you will learn about the thermometer which is used for measuring temperature. The lesson also provides information regarding the various scales of measurement units, including, Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, etc. There are different types of thermometer that you will come across in this chapter.

Section 11.4: In this section, you will learn that an Ideal Gas Equation refers to the combined version of the 3 Gas Laws and provides us with a relation between pressure, temperature, and volume. We also learn about the Universal Gas Constant and the Absolute temperature- the lowest temperature point at which the gases showcase ideal properties. The Absolute Temperature of -273.15 C is the foundation point of the Kelvin Scale. Follow Thermal Properties of Matter Class 11 Numerical for a better understanding of the topic.

Section 11.5: In this section, you will learn that a  person is aware, from everyday experience, that most substances tend to expand on heating and contract on cooling. Changes in body temperature cause changes in the form of shape, volume or density. This expansion due to the presence of heat is referred to as Thermal Expansion. You will also learn about Linear Expansion, Thermal Expansion, Area Expansion, Volume Expansion and their corresponding coefficients in this part.

Section 11.6: In this section, you will learn that Specific Heat Capacity may be defined as the property of a substance responsible for the change in temperature during heat absorption/emission. In this topic, we shall be learning about the different types of Specific Heat properties of a substance.

Section 11.7: In this section, you will learn about Calorimetry, or the measurement of heat and the device used to do it that is called the Calorimeter, in this topic.

Section 11.8: In this section, you will learn that one of the most distinct implications of heat is the change of state that occurs in a substance subjected to a sufficient amount of heat. In this section, we shall be learning about the various changes that may occur on the application of heat, including melting, freezing, fusion, vaporisation, and regelation. We shall also study specific properties of fluid such as boiling point, freezing point, latent heat, etc.

Section 11.9: In this section, you will learn in simple terms, heat transfer is the passing of heat from one body (of higher temperature) to another (of lower temperature). While there are three popularly known types of heat transfer known to people, i.e. Conduction, Convection, and Radiation, there exists another kind of heat transfer process that occurs mainly in outer space (Blackbody Radiation). We shall be learning about Thermal Conductivity, Wien’s Displacement Law, Stefan-Boltzmann Law, and its constants, as well as the Greenhouse Effect phenomenon in this section.

Section 11.10: In this section, you will learn according to the experiments conducted by the great Newton, the rate of cooling of a body is proportional to the excess heat of the system body over the surroundings.
