How long will it take to become an expert in playing tabla?

Tabla is not a certificate course kind of thing that one can say after this duration of time you'll be an expert. It all depends on the innate talent, practice and the training.

Generally tabla is used for Hindusthani Classical Music. Is it possible to implement it in Carnatic as well...?

The basic taala system of Hindustani and Carnatic music is different. In Carnatic they don't have the concept of Theka as in Hindustani music. So accompaniment style changes. First of all it's not true that very few few youngsters are learning Indian music. When you attend any classical music concert these days, the majority of audience would consist of youngsters which is a great sign. When compared to guitar and all may be people learning Indian classical instruments are less. But how many of those guitar learners pursue it seriously? It's just a trend cos they think it's cool. Once it gets difficult, which eventually going to happen, they stop it. And also classical music is for class not for mass.
