It has been hypothesized that Pluto might be everything from an escaped moon of Neptune to a special type of minor planet or asteroid. The orbits of the planets are coplanar because during the Solar System's formation, the planets formed out of a disk of dust which surrounded the Sun. Because that disk of dust was a disk, all in a plane, all of the planets formed in a plane as well.

The remains that scatters on almost one plane like disk over the years after spinning on their own axis become planets. Hence the planet's orbits are co-planar.
