Career in visual merchandising / experience design:
Visual merchandisers design eye-catching product displays and store layouts to encourage sales. Responsibilities depend on the size of their team and what kind of organization they work for. However, their roles tend to require a mixture of artistic, strategic and practical skills. For instance, they might be conducting research into lifestyle trends and regional habits, producing sketches of shop floor plans and physically dismantling displays in the same week.
Especially at entry level, you might be kept on the move a lot, going between your offices and shop floors, and liaising with buying, merchandising and distribution departments. It can be a really exciting job where you will be actively carrying out the work to set up new displays.
You will need:
i. Creativity and imagination.
ii. Design skills to create product displays.
iii. Technical drawing skills.
iv. IT skills to use computer-aided design (CAD) software.
v. Attention to detail.
Usually work in stores' fashion and homeware departments. Your day-to-day tasks will include:
i. designing product displays and floor plans, or following plans from head office.
ii. drawing designs and plans by hand or computer.
iii. using space and lighting creatively.
iv. sourcing materials like models, props, signs and equipment.
v. arranging displays and dressing dummies.
vi. teaching sales staff how to display goods.
vii. producing brand guidelines so all stores have the same look and fee.
