Answer The German army invaded France in May 1940, after about a month the French surrendered and signed an armistice with the Nazis. Which lead to France being divided into two parts - Northern France, occupied and controlled by the Germans and the unoccupied Southern zone in the town of Vichy which came to be known as the Vichy France.
Vichy government was thought to be independent but, in reality, it was pressurised continuously by Nazi France to implement Nazi policies and regime. Initially, the Vichy government only targeted non-French Jews, that has sought refuge in France after the Germans were prosecuting Jews in Germany.
In 1942, the Vichy regime fully collaborated with the Nazis and targeted all Jews irrespective of their citizenships. The summer of 1942 saw Nazis arresting Jews and restricting their movements and dismissing from their jobs by the French police. This happened under the rule of Pierre Laval, who joined the Vichy government as the Prime Minister, who pushed the Vichy regime to cooperate with the Nazi government and deport the Jews fully.
Approximately, 80,000 Jews were deported from France, of which 70,000 were sent to Auschwitz, and the rest were sent to Majdanek, Sobibor and Buchenwald.
