Portuguese comes from Galicia in Northwest Spain. By far, it is considered the most similar language to Spanish. They are closely related and quite similar in many ways. They both occupy the unique geographic layout of the Iberian Peninsula.

For starters, different languages (though they are similar). And Brazil has a different history than the rest of the Spanish speaking countries in South America. It also has a different history of slavery. Brazil was the last of the slave nations in modern times.

People consider Colombian Spanish one of the clearest and most understandable of all the different Spanish dialects. It has various regional accents, but the one from the capital sounds pretty standard.
