Body language is essential in our personal and professional life. Knowing its four below areas will make us excel in projecting the correct Body language, making us confident and impactful. 

Below are the four parameters of Body Language 

  1. Facial expressions - Facial expressions created by our eyebrows, lips to smile, and head movements speak volumes, and one must always be conscious of our facial expressions. To project a positive image carrying a smile makes a lot of difference to our personality, thus making us happier inside out. 
  2. Eye Contact - A proper and direct eye connection is possible only when a person is clear and sure about themself. Instead of looking into others, eyes try making a connection by looking towards them, which also gives an impression that we respect their presence. 
  3. Hand Gestures - Hands play a major role when words fail us. A wave, a pat at the back, folding of hands together in respect or shaking hands all make meaningful conversations. Open palm gesture is considered to be the best welcoming gesture in Hospitality Industry. 
  4. Body posture - A happy and content person always stands straight as the person wants to be noticed. A straight posture is an indication of confidence and a positive attitude. 

Finally, a beautiful smile, empathetic eyes, open hands, and straight body posture sums up in making a person look professional and confident.

We have become so engrossed in the daily and hectic schedules that we fail to notice things that are often so plainly visible. Whether it is the beauty in our surroundings, the emotional triggers of other people, or our repeated error patterns - we are often unable to see beyond things in our daily schedule.

Here are some simple steps to enhance your observation skills and make them razor-sharp:

  • Live in the moment: Observe the changes in the surroundings no matter how minute. Doing so would also enhance your memory, and you would soon see patterns in the occurrence of certain things.
  • Observe and reason: Now that you have observed something - ask yourself the significance of that observation. Logically analyze the situation and pinpoint the purpose behind it.
  • Observe and solve: Next, see if there is an issue attached with your observation. Can something be improved through your reasoning? Ideate and solve everyday problems.
  • Observe and deduct: What are the things/habits that are cluttering your life? Observe and remove them from your life. There would be things that add no value to your life, yet they stunt your growth.
  • Observe and enhance: If you feel something is 'good' - observe and think of ways to make it even better. Be it a situation, your behaviour, or any other aspect around you - look for ways that you could enhance them.

Observation skills are something honed with time and consistent practice. All you need to do is, be present at the moment and look at every minute happenings.

Life is not a bed of roses, and there are bound to be a fair share of triumphs and setbacks.

Setbacks represent that you are getting a step closer to being successful. They are indicators of your hardwork. Instead of being disappointed by failures, all that is needed is to figure out how to get better.

  • Own up the setback: When you put the responsibility of a failure on someone else's shoulders, you would always try to do the same the next time you face a setback. The most significant win in a setback lies in taking responsibility for what happened. Avoid blaming the situation and work towards making it better in the future.
  • Accept the setback: Avoid sugar-coating the situation by saying, "Oh, it's nothing. I'll do well next time." Instead, try saying, "I'll identify the issue". Give yourself a chance to think deeper and accept whatever happened. Simply speaking, "It's not an issue" encourages your mind to avoid facing setbacks in life. How then would you learn from it and not make the same mistakes again?
  • Identify the issues: Evaluate what went wrong and the area that caused the setback. Not doing so would increase the chance of encountering the same setback time and again. This would end up making you feel like you are incapable of doing the concerned task.
  • Focus only on the outcome: Focusing on the effort serves little benefit. Focus on the result and manoeuvre your attempt to achieve those results. It will encourage you to think divergently and redirect the steps to accomplish your aim. Avoid putting more focus on the effort if you are unsure of the outcome.

Someone who does not work towards something never fails. Look at failure & setback with optimism. Ask yourself - 'Has anybody who did not encounter failure ever succeed?'

  2. It makes you proactive: Initiatives are driven by the will to stay ahead of the situation. When you take the initiative, you train yourself to predict and foresee possible solutions to problems that might come up in the future.
  3. Initiatives = innovation: When you take initiatives to do something, you essentially begin coming up with multiple ideas to address the situation. Doing so promotes divergent thinking at the subconscious level and enhances problem-solving.
  4. Initiatives lead to better decision making: When you 'decide' to take the initiative, you have already decided on the best way to deal with a situation. Doing so helps you make better decisions and forms an effective cycle of creative thinking and decision-making.

Initiatives make 'good' even better and put on on a path where you will always seek to grab opportunities and learn all along.

When I was preparing for competitive examination at Pune University around two, and a half a decade ago, I was astonished by one thing Mr Dharmadhikari left his IAS officers job after ten years of service. I was so confused that time why people quits prestigious jobs. After that, I have seen many case studies on mid-career crisis and job shifting. Many people fulfil their passion after retirement only.

In my 20 years of research and study, I found that many people are pursuing goals in their life without congruency. How fast you are going that is not more important but which direction you are going that is more important. As per the study of Yeles University and Harward school of business, only 3% of people are living with a goal. 97% of student did not have a purpose. 

How congruency is important

Congruency means your action and thought has to align with your goal. When I am giving transformational coaching for my clients at that time, I observed many people, even CEO's. Directors, Principal and entrepreneurs do not have congruency. They are thinking something doing a different thing and expecting something and result comes something else. Many people do not have the purpose of life. If will ask the ultimate goal, most of them become blank. Here once again I want to remind you, "How fast you are going that is not more important but which direction you are going that is more important." 

Goal breakup 

Your goal setting should be like this first comes your ultimate goal then the purpose of life. Purpose of life is divided into your long term, midterm and short goal accordingly. 

We must have to ask this question 

1. I am going towards my goal or away from goal. 

2. I am doing significant work or just work. 

3. Is it my every thought and action aligned with my goal

3. What is the purpose of life and birth?

One word that all of us use quite often in many different contexts is Confidence! You need it. You have to have it. Some people have it a lot. Some people struggle even for a little bit. The same person some days have it and then some days tend to lose it for no known reason.

How does that work? Is it something you are born with it? Or you can work on it over a period.

How do you really make Confidence work for you? How do you build it? Since it is not one day process with one particular destination, how do you continue to build it?

Let us break this down and find out how to build confidence – step by step.

One can build confidence with time and experience. You gain it bit-by-bit as you progress through experiences. It is built by overcoming challenges and roadblocks. Now you can either let the events of life take over and hope that as it progresses, it is making you confident day by day.

Or you can intend to work on your confidence.

(Step-1) Identify little challenges which are stopping you from your best and work towards overcoming them. With each small challenge conquered, watch your confidence go a notch higher. Create small wins for yourself as you begin the journey.

As you gain momentum, aim for a big challenge once in a while to step up the speed of gaining confidence. Do not let small setbacks and failures discourage you. They will always be there. Many times we drown in setbacks. Rather get in the action mode. Pick up the lesson and move on. Everybody who has seen any success has failed also. Not a single person can claim that they have achieved everything they wanted to in the very first time. Feel free to go through life stories of your role models.

Be very specific about what you want to achieve. It’s hard to shoot if you do not know your aim. Find out what gives you confidence. You do not have to excel in every field. You may not be a great orator but can have a knack for picking the right investments and making sound financial decisions. Sometimes we spend way too much time staring at what we can’t do instead of what we can.

Start where you are, Do what you can.

Confidence is not only the ability to stand up in the crowded room and cast a spell on the audience with your great speech. If you can do it then Great, If you want to do it or need it for your job, practice then work on it. If you are not able to do it and neither need this skill for your career advancement, then don’t lose sleep over it. 

(Step-2) Finding out what you need, what you want and why you want is a huge step towards gaining confidence.

Be true to yourself while you are analysing your strengths and next steps. Each journey is unique. We all are born with different skills and talents. Comparing yourself to your peers won’t take you anywhere. Comparing your today with your yesterday might bring you closer to your future promises. You have what it takes and then build some more skills. Surround yourself with people who are also rooting for your success, and you are good to go.

(Step-3) Another keyword to gain Confidence is Action. Wanting things, dreaming about them, planning and then not doing anything about it won’t change your confidence levels.

Some people dream of success, while other people get up every morning and make it happen.
