 To get octet, configuration elements may lose or gain electrons. 

By Losing or gaining the electrons an element form, a new species is known as an ion.

Ions are two types. 1. Positive ion ( cation) is  formed by losing electrons

Examples: Na+, K+ , Ca+2 , Al+3 etc

2. Negative ion ( anion) is formed by gaining electrons 

Examples: Cl- , F- , O-2, N-3 etc
