Covalent bonding occurs when atoms share pairs of electrons. Atoms will covalently bond with other atoms to attain the nearest noble gas electron configuration. No ions are formed since they are neither gaining nor sacrificing electrons. There are three types of covalent bonds single, double and triple.
Covalent carbon compounds have stronger bonds than other compounds. Carbon is a small atom, and its nucleus has a strong force of attraction and holds these bonds tightly together. Covalent bonding is so relevant for carbon atoms because it helps to keep them in the same way.
